Buddha Faces at Bayon, Cambodia

The best thing about Buddha? He always looks like he’s up to something amazing, that he’s in on the joke, or he knows something you haven’t quite figured out yet. I keep expecting him to wink…

Right at the heart of Angkor Thom is Bayon with its 216 gigantic Buddha faces carved in stone.

There are 54 towers, each with four faces facing the cardinal directions. The Buddha faces have that similar smiles and closed eyes representing that of  an all-knowing state of inner peace, and perhaps a state of Nirvana. Yet, the faces are all different.CSC_0302

Leaving Bayon, we felt as if there was a deep inner peace within us.
